Cross-Contamination Guide for Coeliacs
Even gluten-free ingredients can become unsafe through shared equipment, fryers, and kitchen practices.
At home
- Dedicated toaster, butter dish, and chopping boards.
- Store GF flours separately — flour dust aerosolises easily.
- Clean colanders and utensils used for wheat pasta.
Restaurants
- Shared fryers — chips may be contaminated by battered foods.
- Pizza ovens, sandwich presses, and grill surfaces.
- Ask about soy sauce, flour thickeners, and dedicated prep areas.
Supermarkets
- Bulk bins and bakery display cases.
- "May contain wheat" on otherwise safe-looking products.
