Can coeliacs eat oats in Australia?

By Gluten Zero Editorial Team · Reviewed by Gluten Zero Medical Review

In Australia, oats cannot carry a gluten-free claim on packaging. FSANZ Standard 1.2.7 restricts this because avenin — a protein in oats — can trigger immune responses in some people with coeliac disease.

That does not mean every coeliac reacts to oats. A subset tolerate specially produced, uncontaminated oats when guided by a gastroenterologist or accredited practising dietitian. This is individual medical advice, not a blanket rule.

If you choose to try oats, look for products specifically labelled as gluten-free oats (not the same as a FSANZ gluten-free claim on other foods), verify batch testing, and monitor symptoms carefully.

What to check: ingredient lists, may-contain warnings, and whether the oats were grown and milled away from wheat and barley.
