Australian Food Labels & FSANZ Gluten Rules
Australian gluten-free claims are regulated — not marketing slogans. Here is what FSANZ requires on packaging.
FSANZ Standard 1.2.7 — Nutrition & health claims
A product labelled gluten free in Australia must contain no detectable gluten under approved testing methods. This is stricter than many international markets.
Allergen declaration (Standard 1.2.3)
Wheat, rye, barley, and oats must be declared when present. Watch for barley malt extract listed separately from wheat.
"May contain" statements
Advisory warnings are voluntary but common. For coeliac disease, assess cross-contamination risk individually — especially on shared manufacturing lines.
Oats in Australia
Under FSANZ 1.2.7, oats cannot carry a gluten-free claim in Australia/NZ due to avenin. See our oats guide.
Coeliac Australia endorsement
The crossed-grain trademark indicates products meet Coeliac Australia licensing criteria — a helpful shortcut, not a legal requirement for all safe products.
